Speed up startup of octave

I am constantly shelling out of a text editor (vim) to pipe text into octave. But octave takes seconds to launch. Is there a way to speed it up? I know that I can keep a command line window upon and get octave to source a script that I can constantly edit, but that is way less convenient.

to source a script that I can constantly edit, but that is way less
convenient.
