Code Development Cycle

I am new to Octave and would like a recommendation on how to implement
an efficient proceedure development cycle. I have been doing it by
opening one terminal with an editor and another with octave running but
that seems somwhat messy. Is there a better way?

Please elaborate. I am using an external editor (vim, if you ever
wondered) and I am not finding it messy. What exactly bothers you?
