I just installed octave ... using the Windows forge installer or some
such ..... and I got the icon on my screen ... but it starts up a dos
program ...

What's up with that?

How to get the standard interactive interface ????

Oops ... I reloaded and specified 'console' and got something that
looks more like a console ... and ... is a console .... (maybe what I
had before was a console that looks like a dos window ?)

I never used Octave on Windows, but I think so.

I had the same problem. I installed this console under WinXP
professional and found some error messages.

My solution is use QtOctave as the GUI front-end under Win, you can
download here:
http://qtoctave.wordpress.com/what-is-qtoctave/

It works under XP very well.
